I saw a Nikon D2H (originally priced at $2,399.00) on Amazon selling used for $339.00. I guess if you wait long enough (seven years) you can get an FX camera at bargain basement prices.

You're joking… right!
The mentioned body has a 4MP chip in it… my iPhone 4 does better than that!
For more decent and recent Nikon chips, I don't think 7 years is even worth it:
My D3X cost me a premium price that I never regretted… but with my D800E,
that feels more mickey mouse than a real gun, packs up 36.? MP!
And then, there is the market-share war that will bring better performing
tools at more decent prices than the single digits bodies!
What I'm dreaming of is photo gear where I don't have to pay for video features
that do not appeal to me in anyway… a real camera! …with waist level finder!!!
like my old F3's and F4's.

What is wrong with 4mp?
It was (is) a top end professional camera used by pro's all over the world to take and sell commercially viable images. I know things move on and our expectations with it but there is nothing wrong with lower pixels if the end output doesn't require more.
John,
That is the question I am asking as well – new or used?
A D3x in very good condition for R 27 000.00 new price was R 68 000.00.
Canon 1D MK3 for R16 000.00. Canon 1Ds MK2 for R 6500.00.
Yes I do believe you can pick up a good FF at a bargain price, depending on what you want to do with it.
The question is: "What's right with 4MP?"
In the days of the F4 and F5, I was a happy photographer providing my client
a 12 hour PRESS service. That means shooting and sending undeveloped film
anywhere around the world within 12 hours. The first time I saw my shots was
possibly weeks/months later as centrefold or front page. News service had to
be very fast.
With digital photography a lot of things were about to change! No worry for film
supply or labs, one could see his takes as they were forwarded through satellite
telephone… so replacing the bulk of film by the bulk of a computers and commu-
nication devices. The money saved on films and labs was spent 15 times more on
other gear! All these expenses to save time and be the first on the market with
a possible candidate picture for a front page.
I stubbornly stuck with film: 35mm, 120, 4x5 and 8x10. My clients wanted more
than postcard prints (300dpi). So the press (+/- 150dpi) photographers were the
only ones to have advantage with the new gear.
I started switching to digital workflow only when the D3S came on the market. It
did not have the required resolution but for some of my work. Then, the D3X! It all
started to look better. Parallel to the pixel counts, the software evolved too. Nowadays,
my gear can produce files of some 80MP and my softwares can stitch or stack a given
number of files for an appropriate end product.
So,what's right with 4MP? It is perfect if you plan a family photo album.
I would look for a low shutter-count Nikon D700 if I were after a pre-enjoyed full-frame camera.
