    Lament

It would appear that I am having a huge problem with my Granddaughters growing up.

I wanted them to stay little girls forever. I knew I should have nipped this problem in the bud a long time ago!

(Sigh!) It looks like they are going to grow up anyway now matter what I want!

This was again shot with grandboyfriend’s (pictured) Canon xxx (Txi Rebel line. I didn’t get what it was at the time) and kit lens so he could have it on his card. I’m impressed and he shoots in RAW.

We tried several variations on this pose but after I shot this I put his camera down.

I just didn’t think I would be able to do any better at that particular moment.

Nor do I. Such an expressive composition. Superb image.

Edit is OK… always want to learn!

    Re: Lament

    Hi Terry,

Really looks like a sweet couple! Two things:
    • Good: the cool soft and even light you got on your models and the tonal rendition
    • Not so good: the pp work to darken the background specially the floor area.

    Tell me about the setup…

Keep that recipe for the toning that you used in this and the other photo. It's just so sublime.

I like everything about the image except I wish I could see folds in fabric on the floor. As it is, it looks as if they are not quite floating.

    Re: Lament

Thank you guys! I appreciate it!

    The lighting setup (As requested?)-

    Three lights fired.

32” Octa camera right at darn near directly side positioned. Slightly above their head level. Feathered up and away to reduce spill to the bottom and BG of the set.

7” reflector and barn doors firing through a diffusion screen at camera left and positioned approx 45* off camera and low (head level). Angled off the diffuser from camera angle back. Camera side close to the diffuser and angled out from the diffuser toward the rear of the set. Wearing barn doors adjusted to (hopefully) flag light to the camera and bottom door adjusted to reduce spill to the surface. Rear door adjusted to (hopefully) reduce spill on BG and help confine to the subjects. I might add I love shooting a light through a diffusion panel. I think it is a great way to control, soften, and maybe more importantly, add a gradient fall off. I like it even better when I shoot it with a strip box for further softness control.

Rim camera left and behind the scene also sporting barn doors. Left, right, and bottom doors tight.

    Re: Lament

Maybe it's just my monitor but it sorta looks like they're floating in darkness. I think this type of shot is definitely best with some sort of scenic background. Otherwise another great portrait shot, Terry!

    Cheers

The skin tones look nice. The first time I looked at the image I thought they were floating. Also, the edges of your subjects are a bit too sharp for my taste. I would have preferred some feathering. Overall, it looks nice.

Speaking of taste, I can't think of any two people whose approach to lighting and post-processing is as different as yours and Terry's.

Terry, images should be about feeling, and I want to keep looking at this. Just lovely.

You did not start cleaning your gun in front of him when he was visiting, did you? Or you just sharpened your bread knife?

Yeah...they grow so quickly it's difficult to put a stop to that. I am just glad mine is still a baby...and missing her so badly already as she is across the pond at the moment...

    Re: Lament

    Of course not Izzie!

That would be crass and without any class whatsoever!

I did that the first time we met!

He knows I keep my firearms spotless (and loaded) and my bread knives honed to a razors edge! It is a Rite of Passage! My Father-in-Law allowed me the same courtesy! I was 40 years old at the time for crying out loud!

I was unable to put this horror to a halt Izzie. Soooo….

…I’m just going to have to be happy for the times I get, and miss her the rest of the time.

You must be an awesome Grandma Izzie!
