    Concerts. Lighting Probs

Hi everybody. Dropped by Pershing Square,L.A. last night to pick up some experience shooting concerts under "bad lighting". As you can see, the stage lighting guy preferred lighting them up with bluish light. Luckily, he did change the lights every now and then. But mostly, bluish. When I checked with another fotog/Nikon D7100, he said, we'll just have to do what we can with available light.

Here are some shots I took of a Bon Jovi Tribute band. I used my Nikon D5100. manual mode:f5.6, 1/160, autoISO6400. kit lens: 18-105mm. Focus mode: AF-C. Focus Area: AF-Auto. matrix metering. autoWB.

Thanks for any comments/critique you may have.

    Victor,

Looks like you got some realistic color shots in there, that's all you can ask for. For the others I would consider black and white or modification of WB if these were shot RAW. Nice captures.

    I shoot gigs remember

    RAW RAW RAW

Absolutely NOTHING wrong with what you have.

Also shoot wide open as shallow DOF is crucial in live band shots and convert the 1st to MONO

You don't say dont edit but happy to remove

    I use mono a lot

I think the images are very good.

Consider this: if you weren't a photographer but there to see/listen to the band, what colours would your eyes have seen?

I think you'd have seen: purple, magenta, and green.

You've captured the look and feeling of the event.

You SHOULD NOT attempt to change anything.

If you shot a sunset scene, would you change the WB to daylight? I hope not.

Regarding the concert shots, you may see purple, magenta, and green but it doesn't mean you liked what you saw or how it made the performers look.

Then if that's the case, why do they use coloured lighting? Someone must like it.

In any event, if the lighting is coloured, then there isn't much one can do to make it "natural" (whatever natural is).

Sometimes we get lemons - work with the lemonade.

They probably do it to make one set look different from the next. It might appeal to the general audience but not to the photographer doing marketing for the band. Which poster would the band like to see printed, the blue smurf one or the flesh colored one? Maybe both, maybe neither.

Looks like you had a good time at the concert...Not the real Bon Jovi but it is OK...anyway I can see both arguments. Keep the coloured version for the memory and reference but edit it like how John said -- make it good for the poster advert.
