More Flowers (No Squirrels)

Maybe we should start a New Blooms thread. But it is tempting to photograph a bit of colour as we head into spring.

Lovely. #1 is perfect. I'm depressed, I just cannot get shots like that, and I don't get my lenses at Toys R Us, so it must be me . I like #4 too. It reminds me of palm trees reflected in the water on the shore of an island (if I imagine it horizontal anyway). Amazing what you can do with sprouts, and good for you too. (They are sprouts aren't they?)

YES, of course - here's an idea; twist it back horizontal, merge with a similarly reflected shot of a small pile of sand, give it a blue backdrop....

Thank you Antonio. No filters. We had quite stormy weather yesterday and the afternoon sun was breaking through the storm clouds. The light was very subtle as it streamed through the french window. I used very low power flash bounced of the ceiling to fill.

Can you explain how you achieved this effect? In Photoshop?

Yan someone with far more experience will be able to explain a far simpler way of doing this but here goes anyway

After the usual levels, curves and sharpening I cropped the image to taste.
Create a new canvas (twice the height of the original)
Copy and paste the original image onto the new canvas and position at the top
Return to the original image and flip horizontal
Copy and paste the flipped image onto the new canvas and position at the bottom (aligning the stalks)
Rotate the whole image 40 degrees
Dropper the background and bucket fill the empty corners left by the rotation

Thank you all for your comments and Wendy do not give up. I dont practice much on flowers (or anythng else for that matter....lazy sausage) but I do try to understand what the light is doing (or what I want it to do) before thinking about the composition of the subject. This dictates what angle I shoot at and/or where to position controllable light and what power I think it should be. This devils brew of camera settings, light, backgrounds and compositions either works or it doesn't. I have very slowly started to get an instinct for what will work and what will not work but it is a long slow process

Steve, I think you might find it best to crop the image first (preferably in RAW if you shot in RAW as you can always go back to it). Then do all the other changes, with sharpening last.
