Pond Anilao

I hardly ever share my pictures of nature as I am more of a portrait photographer. Moreover, I judge that my nature shots are mostly prosaic. This is one of those shots that I feel more confident to share.

Taken in the Philippines around 2010 with a Panasonic DMC LX3 Point and Shoot. The camera only had 10 mp. The worst part was I dropped it on a raging river. I let it dry for 3 days and re-used it on this landscape. Obviously, the camera still worked. Maybe the water that got inside the camera gave it special powers. Who knows?

The calm fish pond is owned by my wife's sister-in-law. For years, she was in a legal battle to claim its ownership. Finally, the court settled that she has rightful ownership. It was battle worth pursuing, I think.

Rob, everything works in that image! The clouds are so prominent; and the different textures on the water, and the brighter light highlighting the land jutting out.

I don't normally like B&W images but...this one changed my outlook on them. Great sky with lots of interest in the rest of the image which makes my eyes explore, well done.

Based on the success of this photo, it obvious that you should intentionally drop your camera into the water on a regular basis. What is the purpose of the wooden apparatus in the lower right area of the image? Is it made from bamboo and/or palm trees?

As far as I know, it's made of bamboo and palm trees. It's used to hang the fishing nets to dry.

IMO, the sky has lost all of its magic because of the higher contrast. The whole
scene is affected by the chosen rendition but the sky suffers the most.

You should do and share more of the kind of takes… you're good at it!

The overall style of this image is similar to the overall style of your portraits, which is different than how most images are made. It's in that context that I review your images; it doesn't make any sense to me to review them in the context of how others typically make images.

If you would display as many photos of landscapes in this style as you display as portraits, I think people would probably more easily accept the landscapes. It's clear to me (though I could be wrong) that you made this image as you envision it. There's not much more of a compliment that I can give someone even when it's not a style that particularly moves me.
