A Couple More From Queenstown NZ

These two shots were taken last week in Queenstown, both looking south over lake Wakatipu. I used a B&W treatment with mild selenium toning on the second to emphasise the cold bleak morning. Comments welcome.

I like the 2nd shot, Dave, the selenium adds a good touch. It does feel crips and chilly to me. I am just wondering if the snow shouldn't be a little bit lighter in colour, though?

Both very nice shots Dave.

Something that I notice with these two is that they both show a very clear and sharp water horizon line that almost appears unnatural to me, it is something I have noticed in a few of my own recent images also. I have been wondering if water horizon lines such as this are treated in any special way by others.

Grahame - excellent question. I don't landscape much but always open to knowing things.

I like both images too Dave...I really like NZ very much...so much to see, so much to enjoy though it is smallist place.

Note to Bobo and Grahame...maybe when you take sharp shots like these, think of it as a candidate for a little bit of slow shutter speed to take care of the sharpness of the horizon and the water. And if already done like this, can this still be edited in PP? Just asking...

Greg I'll see what I can do to brighten up the snow.

Grahame I haven't done anything special in regard to the water horizon. Maybe it's related to the vertical position of the camera relative to the water level and distance to horizon ?

Two nice images Dave. For me, I would only brighten the snow on the centre of the comp. but darken it at the LH edge. That would tend to hold your eye in the comp ant take it through to the mountains in the distance. Just a thought.

In terms of scenery, people often compare New Zealand with Scotland ... or vice-versa. The images in this thread and that in Peter's thread, here, maybe tell you why.

Donald I have only been to Scotland once a few years ago. I would love to return sometime for some serious highland photography !

Binnur You'll have to trust me when I say I had noticed the head and intended to get rid of it. But I forgot ! I will attend to it.

Great set Dave, I really like your first image, if it were mine I would have it framed and on the wall.
When we were in Queenstown we did a trip on the TSS Earnslaw the first day as the weather forecast for the following day was for rain, it did rain later that same evening but .... when we got up the next morning there was the first snow of the season on the mountains which made our trip even more memorable.

Just out of interest, my other current thread (Sheep Farmer) was taken at Walter Peak Sheep Station which, as you are probably aware, you reach by travelling on the TSS Earnslaw - and what a wonderful way to reach it ! My grandson enjoyed going down below to see the steam engines working.

Is it the same original Earnslaw or a replica?
We used to go on it as children & I'm pretty old now!
We stayed in Arrowtown, I hope it is still the same, but I guess not.

Kay I can't speak with any authority on this but I think it would be the original. It's an old steamer and travels on Lake Wakatipu out of Queenstown. So it's probably the same one you travelled on as a child, all those years ago
