I like this kind of graphic visual approach… I note this:
• Great presence of micro-contrast & B&W conversion
• The square format is showing a empty boring sky as an horizontal frame
would have shown more of the geologic environment to the right of the frame
• By off centring the subject, you may create some visual tensions in the
composition… rarely boring!
Nice shadow formations.
Dave,
I think it's an image which will generate interest.
Viewing it from a 'geological' point I'd say the detail of the rocks needs to be somewhat sharper and you could crop some of the sky and a tad of the LHS - otherwise just looking at it as a straightforward image my personal preference would be for stronger contrast with sky and LHS cropped as above.

I like everything about this, especially when viewed in its largest size. It's a very bold presentation that fits the bold subjects. The subjects are off-center just barely enough to eliminate what might have otherwise been a static presentation. The tension in this image is between the contrasty texture in the land formations and the very plain sky. The sky won't work for everyone, perhaps not for most people, but it works really well for me in this context.
I really like this one a lot Dave! Fix the dust bunny in the sky and maybe apply some selective noise reduction to the upper portion of the sky then print it, frame it, hand it on your wall and wait for the compliments to start coming your way
Yep, I'm with others on this. Ticks all the boxes - composition, exposure, light, B &W conversion.
But, indeed, the dust bunny need zapped.
I actually like the use of the empty space in the sky. I vote "Yes!".
I am in the club of the Yes! I like the composition and the shadows adds to the interest too. Overall, it is a simple and really good image.
I love the image as is Actually I always prefer interesting scenes to the usual ones I like the texture , light and B&W conversion very much in this image.
Nicely done. And I like the negative space above the rocks.
Well done.
Thanks everyone for the positive feedback - much appreciated.
We saw these rocks a couple of days before, and I thought "they should look good in b&w" so when we went back a couple of days later I shot with that in mind. A first for me!
That damn dust bunny. I looked in the original colour image and couldn't see any, but then up the structure in b&w and there it is. Every day's a school day
Incidentally, as you can see from the exif, this was shot with a modest m4/3 G5 with the kit lens.

I agree with Mike's comments on this photo, Dave. The square crop and the triangular arrangement of the rocks emphasise their strength and durability. They're still here, so they must be strong. The sky may be empty but I feel it is a crushing presence in this picture and the rocks are withstanding that pressure.
Very nice. I like everything about it - except the dust bunny.
