I am, sometimes, trapped in a photograph. I purposely use the word "trapped"
because something caught me and I didn't know what it was. Quite early in my
career I learned:
—When there is no urgency to take a decision, the only decision
that could be urgent to take is to take no decision… urgently!—
With time, I discover that, even to myself, many picture have secrets that
baffle me in PP. "What should I do with this? …it's very nice but why? what?
Then a maturing process kicks in and, slowly, the trap opens itself revealing
what and why this capture exists."
Over time, when in the shooting momentum, a lot of decisions are taken,
instants are chosen, angles preferred, expressions selected, and what not.
And all this is based on a mix of instinct, experience and improvisation.
This is a perfect place to plug this quote:
"…you don't know what you're doing but you will know what you have done".
