I have a killdeer nesting in my front yard right now as well, in the Houston, Texas area. Your photo is a nice shot, and it shows how they will sometimes nest on hard, rocky surfaces. At a friend's house nearby one is nesting on rocks similar to the one in your photo, but "my" killdeer is nesting on soft mulch around a tree in the front yard.
Nice shots. I'm glad you included the first one for perspective. I'm surprised her mate was not nearby screeching and running around in circles pretending to have a broken leg and trying to distract you away from the nest. Around here I see Kildeers nesting in the gravel along the railway tracks. They really do pick strange places for nests. My neighbor gave me directions where to walk, turn stop etc. I was 5' from the nest when I finally saw it. C&C welcome
