    A Fresh Morning

Sometimes simple appeals to me and this is one of those I believe, a view of an uncultivated bit of land, some mist and a few seconds before that magic will be lost.

I spent longer trying to come up with a title than working on it.

    1/10s, f/20, ISO200, 28mm

    A Fresh Morning

Comments and suggestions are welcome as always.

I wonder if there is a fraction too much foreground which is then positioning your horizon on the half way line?

Alternatively, a fraction too much sky?

I'm not sure that convention is the way to go with this one Geoff. For me, by cropping the sky it will lose the emphasis of the arch of the suns light and by cropping the bottom the detail of that grass is lost.

    Hi Grahame,

I love the perspective, and the beautiful rainbow sun you captured (and its' reflection in the mist). Also the lovely light and detail in the grass.

If the image were mine I would crop it just a little above the rainbow sun, and from the left to balance the crop. Just because I love the rainbow sun and I like the framing this way.

    Yes, simple is beautiful.

    Hi Christina,

I'm pleased you like the image, it was one of those lucky unplanned shots where exposure decisions have to be made quickly.

The grass at the foreground has to remain in any crop but having tried removing some of the sky my preference is to leave as is

For info a GND was used for this one.

Lovely treatment...I like that you admitted using a GND filter for this...I have to school myself in using some of my filters...I had sort of enjoyed using them in films but shelved them way before I turned digital. Very nice. No...I agree...do not crop. It is nice as it is...

    Hi Izzie,

Pleased you like the treatment of this, it's just kept very natural and I tried to emphasise that gorgeous grass foreground. From what I'm finding out as I'm becoming a regular early riser these days is that if there is a very clear starry night there's a good chance of this mist being around, I hope to find some more.

As for the GND it was the only option for taking this particular shot

And you did very well in it too...I've seen a lot looking towards the Smokey Mountains on our last trip but my camera was wayyyyyyyyyy at the back and hidden. I think I will station it up front with me when we travel to Florida in three weeks' time...

    Thank you Binnur,

It's an area that I want to explore more because there are a number of small shacks (read houses) on stilts around and if I could just capture one of those in a similar scene it would be more magic.

Yeah for mist and early mornings!

This is a very peaceful image and you are continuing to develop and refine a very naturalistic approach to your work that I admire very much Grahame.

Thank you for sharing and always being so generous with the how's and why's

Very peaceful image and well caught. The last time I saw a shot like this the sun too high before I could get the composition I wanted. The colors are beautiful.

    Hi Shane,

Thank you for the kind compliment.

As for the how's and why's here's a bit of an expansion. Having lost the use of my 18-200mm due to a VR fault I'm now in that dreaded position of having to decide what to do. My decisions revolve around the other lenses I have and what FLs I consider I need for the work I want to do.

The lens used for this shot is my old 28-105mm which some months ago I stripped to both clean all elements and try and sort it's refusal to AF on distant objects. It's now working fine although I still have a slight concern about its edge sharpness so rather than taking more 'test' shots decided the only way I'll come to a decision is to take real world shots with it for a while.

On the morning I took this I had been to my favourite seascape location with the rocks/coral and the island in the background and although arriving there under a magnificent cloud free sky full of stars after a few shots decided for some reason the island was too obscure, jumped in the wagon and raced back to the misty area I had passed earlier.

On spotting this scene I ground to a halt, rushed across the road, plonked the tripod on mushy wet grass took an initial exposure, adjusted, took this and following shots had the sun starburst and not worth PPing.

I have now sorted myself a redundant hand held GPS, plotted my routes on it (simple here) and am marking locations where I see potential shots, should be fun

    Thank you Terri.

Shooting the sun like this I suspect is ideally done if you are there well before and fully prepared.

Should I do similar again with time for planning I would be set up with remote release, tripod well anchored, camera set for bracketing and have done some experimentation to determine if multi exposure or GNDs best give the result I want.

    Re: A Fresh Morning

I love the visual of how you captured this image Grahame...particularly how you plonked the tripod down

Sometimes things work out the way they are supposed to and this images was meant to be yours. Your GPS planning, however simple, is much more efficient than my method of planning. I just spy locations and then try to remember them later which is highly ineffective.
