What a difference a month makes

My wife and I did a very short hike with some of the gear we are planning to travel to the Himalayas with later on this month (I'm shaking down other gear, not just the cameras), so we did a trip to the Gatineau Hills, which are the foothills of the Laurentian Mountains to get a bit of work climbing and descending in rough terrain. It was a nice late summer afternoon to do this.

Part of the route we took went past Little Meech Lake. Some of the trees are just starting to turn and the area will be in full autumn colours in about a month. An interesting comparison is a shot I took from the same viewpoint as I did during the fall colours last year.

I'm not sure what the fall is like in Austria, but my parents always complained how (Eastern) Canada really had no real spring or fall and back in Germany they were used to four seasons that were roughly three months each.

I had the opportunity to work in Germany for about 18 months about 20 years ago and found that indeed, the seasons were more balanced with short mild winters and short mild summers when compared to what I was used to in Canada. I remember seeing my grandfather out in his garden in February, while here I would be several months away from seeing anything but snow.

Yes, hockey is starting up again here too, and school was back this week as well (and the traffic levels were back to "normal", which doubles the amount of time I spend driving to and from work).

Fall: nice balance between sunny and rainy days, great colours… but the reds are missing.
Winter: gray, dark, not much snow, mild… in other parts of the country, very different.
Spring: Glorious, bright, flowery and full of fragrances, comes rather quickly and melts with summer.
Summer: not so hot as in Montréal, less mosquitos, beautiful nature.

When are you leaving for Asia?

Yes the reds are distinctly Eastern North America and Japan, although I have heard that Korea has reds as well. The rest of the world seems to be yellow for fall foliage.

Your winters sound rather depressing, but the other three seasons look wonderful. I look up the area of Austria where you live; not an area we have been too. We have been to Austria on three different occasions; Vienna for a week and Salzburg (in and around the Salzlkammergut) another time for about a week and spent a wonderful week on Gmunden on the Traunsee many years ago (when our oldest daughter was still very young).

As for South Asia - we are leaving in 2-1/2 weeks; our first day in Bhutan is in three weeks from today. We still need to get our visas for India (the Indian High Commission does not want to issue them until 1 - 2 weeks prior to departure); so that's on my "to do" list for tomorrow.

I do on occasion miss the changing of the seasons. This is one of those occasions.

Sorry guys there is an International Hockey Association and an International Ice Hockey Association so by hockey you are obviously referring to the very civilized game I played for years...

Nice shots Manfred. The colours and reflections are so good in both of them that I do not know whether to visit Canada in the summer or the fall.

I've never visited Canada in any weather except winter -- via North Dakota -- accompanying some college kids to go "across the border". They call it their "I went overseas" trip. Anyway, just reminiscing here...

I love your changing of colour shots...way different in atmosphere between the two. In the first one, the clouds looks like ice formations in the water and the calmness of whole scene whereas in the second one, the colours really pops and that thin white trunk of a tree near the middle seems to form the separation between the areas. The reflections in both really made these shots really good. Love it.
