Why shoot high FPS burst?

Here's why.

These two shots were taken 0.3 sec apart in dense fog. I posted the first one in another thread a few days ago. They are processed and cropped slightly differently in PP because I pulled the second one out after re-visiting my shots for the trip. IMO the body posture and open mouth in the second frame make it a completely different image. Or is it just me?

Switching from one to the other in the light box really accentuates the differences.

Not just you Dan; the second image is certainly the stronger of the two. Some might argue that 0.3 sec is not high speed burst, though.

It does indeed, Dan. I don't anything about your wildlife but in the first shot the bear seems harmless enough, whereas in the second one it seems a bit annoyed.

Considering that I was using a film camera with no motor drive until about ten years ago, I call it ultrahigh speed.

She was annoyed. She had two cubs and she was huffing at them as a way of calling them. They had gotten too close to us for mom's comfort. And looking at her they were WAY too close for my comfort. When they are getting really annoyed they start popping their jaws and drooling. And if the ears drop, well, then you may find out what bear breath smells like...

To me, this seems not to be a good reason to not shoot high fps, was it meant to be?

The second one is probably what most people would think was a more interesting bear photo, it's pretty cool.

What would you have done if they decided to act upon a wish that you weren't there? (Just curious )

Not sure if it's the mouth or claws to be most worried about here but she certainly looks concerned more in the second image Dan.

Rely on the bear being too preoccupied with camera gear, tennis shoes, and feces to give chase

I wasn't there but if I had been there, my only concern would have been to make sure that I was running away faster than the slowest person.

Now we know one more reason to bring a friend along (Old joke) It has been recommended to stay close to a car, but that can't always be done.

I think, as this is actually supposed to be a good reason to shoot high fps, but it was a little confusing at first.

Definitely the second one for me Dan. Maybe a bit too much space for me on the RHS?? Not sure.

I see these differently, Dan -- if you noticed the paw of the first shot saying...come closer you punk! and the second one was the warning...and you did not feel its breathe so the third shot was a could have been...a close up of it's nose breathing hard on you... get that Go-Pro off your head!

Thanks for all the comments, folks. I guess it makes the point in the OP that shooting bursts can capture small, momentary differences that make a big difference in an image.

Interesting how the optimist/pessimist view on things effects even things like viewing an image. My wife, wearer of the proverbial "rose colored glasses", says the second image looks like the bear is smiling.
