Hi Steve, you have three strong elements in this image that are very close to competing for attention, the rock in the foreground, the lake in the middle ground, and the clouds in the sky.

I prefer something interesting in all three areas but in this case, being as they are all strongly attracting the eye, I would be tempted to play with cropping to either eliminate most of the clouds or the rock.

When I play with this image and remove about half of the clouds and about half of the foreground below the rock, the rest of the image doesn't seem to be quite as jarring. But then, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and others may not see it the same way.

I too, much prefer this 2nd shot, I thought the first one felt a little over sharpened. Sometimes the colours are just 'too' fantastic and thats why we stop and go 'AH'. I think the previous posts about framing have said it all so I'll just say 'thanks'

I certainly prefer the color version Steve, those lovely blues and greens create a balanced composition and add to the image a lot

The second version to me is very nice image and the idea of the vertical pano appeals.

What I didn't like about the original that nobody else commented on was the brightness if the foreground which looked ugly to me. I was going to suggest cropping it off until you toned it down.

Don't know if others think so or not, but certain images tend to bring to mind the moon when in B&W (Minus the clouds and water)

The same creates two entirely different moods: the colored one is heavenly pleasing where as the black and white induces a feeling of desolation and distress; i like both of them from two different levels of enjoyment
