Yep, they have over-run the Hummingbird feeders.

Not bees. They are some kind of wasp, but I don't know which. I would be careful; unlike bees, these are not likely to be peaceful.

It's certainly a different perspective Jon, it's when they face and stare at you that you need to worry.

Dan, I really didn't hang around to try and make friends. I found out rather quickly that they were not the friendly type...got tagged 4 times.

I can share your pain Dan, they got hold of me once when I was a kid. Here in Oz we call them European wasps and they are the single most nasty, bad tempered waste of space with wings, other than that I like them. Good photos, and sorry you had to find out their temperament the hard way.

I once had a shot similar to this one you have but they are real bees that makes honey...It also overrun my hummingbird feeder so i took it down this year -- guess what? this year the hummingbirds are more prolific without the feeder...Some said you should have at least 4 of them so that the wasp or the bees gets one for themselves and the hummingbird can have one at least not having a bee in any...I haven't tried that..

We have 5 of them around and the hummingbirds seem to prefer the one with all the wasps. Go figure
