    ACTION SHOTS Mini Competition #3

The idea here is shots that are not posed, where the primary purpose of the subject is not to help you create a good image. And where there's something going on.

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post images of ACTION in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forums

    Cheers,

I suspect that's both the answer and the question, Steve, and part of the reason why I haven't got into it.

    Patience.

I'm always in awe of wildlife film-makers when they describe their work on TV, etc. It's the setting up and then ... the waiting ... and the waiting. And I suspect that folks on here who are the specialists in this area, may say the same.

Cheers Donald; I do wait and wait and....snooze,THEN Something happens but I missed it, then wait. Are you allowed to get them agitated, don't suppose it is really, besides the swans might give me a nasty peck.

    I don't think so either, well I don't.

My patience lasts about 10 minutes in one spat with absolutely nothing happening, but longer if it looks like something might occur (e.g. a squabble is brewing amongst the wildlife). I don't nod off or 'zone out' - but only because I'm standing It can happen that I miss something while moving between locations (e.g. when view of river obscured by bushes/trees), now that's

I quite like Jeroen's tag line it goes something like "Photograph and leave nothing but footprints", so I guess angry geese or swans violate that rule

I don't even feed them, not sure if you're supposed/allowed to - I know they say if garden birds get into a habit of being fed, then you stop, they all die
I have just started with some feeders (so there's another job for life), but not many takers at the moment and 0 photo opps so far

But I do wonder if, when out walking in the countryside, a small sprinkle of seed to encourage already present birds to a precise area is acceptable? Guess I ought to ask that question elsewhere; e.g. Wild about Britain or similar.

    Cheers,

    Re: Dancer

I don't feed them Dave but everybody else is giving them bacon butties That's why they don't move much. I waited about an hour but couldn't stand it any longer, I did get some but always a bird in front or submerged head or somebodies backside. Right at the end a couple of swans did a fly past, bit far away though since I was already leaving.

    Re: Dancer

As you say, public park or 'tourist riverside' feeding is unregulated, but also liable to be fairly consistent, given the population. You can always photograph while others feed them.

It was the very occasional use of small amount of seed thrown on the ground as a landing incentive in woodlands (where not banned by signs) or off the beaten tourist track I meant. It may not be effective anyway, I havn't tried.

Hi Arith: I don't think it's a good idea to intentionally get them agitated (for them or for you ). I've been spending a lot of time at a local park and a conservation area. At this time of year you do not have to agitate them. They are all very territorial right now and mating up so if you wait and watch something is bound to happen, unless your British birds are more civilized than our Canadian ones.

Instead of snoozing while you wait - watch them. You will start to see patterns of behaviour and then you will know where to go and what signals to watch for when something is going to happen. I've got that part down pat, I can't get the shots though, I'm too slow.

Not sure how I feel about baiting them. I don't really think I'd have any pangs of guilt about throwing a couple treats to lure them to a particular spot. At the parks around here everyone feeds them so all you have to do is sit (or stand) somewhere along the shore and they will come over to check you out. Some of them even get very annoyed if you don't have anything for them (I found out the hard way) Something to think about though, as I suppose in the long run a natural diet is probably better for them.

    Re: Dancer

I don't think food will work Wendy; when I was there last week I was amazed by the amount of bacon butties being thrown at them, I thought it would be nice if I had one.
They don't care about me anymore; in the winter they thought I was great, in my pockets checking out my wallet but now they don't care
Only joking, but now they are overfed, there is even a shop selling swan food and it is full all the time, and they are mating but I just ain't fast enough. cheers

    Cat & mouse

This was an 'action' challenge. "Quick", shouted my lady, "Get your camera".
Rushed from the garden, into the house, up the stairs, grab camera, back into garden, trip over root (but saved the camera ), start up camera and ... then I just got this shot with the mouse nearly out of the pic.
They both sure moved fast ... please do not ask what happened to the mouse
