    Fast food!

I'm an avid duck hunter, but, I also hunt ducks with a camera. I was out walking late one afternoon at a nearby wetlands park area. I heard the flapping wings of a duck in the distance and saw this one coming right toward me. I had only one chance at getting a good shot since I had a 75-300 lens on and my camera set to single shot. I was pleasantly surprised to see the results. For those not familiar, this is a Mallard hen (on afterburner). C&C welcome.

LOL!! I'm always looking for ways to improve my photography/PP skills. I'm already pretty decent with my grilling skills.

Imagine you as the photographer setting up this shot only to get spooked by the sound of a shotgun.

Obviously, the wings are slightly blurred, but that can ad an effect of motion. I like how there is some horizon in the lower part of the scene. I'm just curious, could you tell this from an eclipse male mallard?

The hen(female) mallard has an orange/brown beak. A drake (male) mallard has a greenish yellow beak. During the summer months, it is the only way to tell the difference. They are both colored a mottle brown. They don't get their distinctive colors until late fall and it peaks around late January. This was shot in the month of June so almost all of the duck species are some shade of brown.

With a camera or with a shotgun, they each have their own aspect of fun and skill involved. Besides, a mallard is one of the tastiest ducks there are (is?).

Interesting, thanks. I think of the colorful male plumage as being a typical look for mallards, (mottled brown being common too), in fact, I do recall seeing one in colored plumage, (green head etc.) in the month of June I think. I wonder if there could be a regional difference in this.

Peking Duck for your table...and I have to buy them ducks at the supermarket... AK47 or camera will both be good for these flying kind. There is nothing like fresh for the dinner table... including fish and vegetables...and of course rice. Better than roadkill. Nice capture...

I haven't seen any "greenheads" during the summer months where I live but I guess it could be possible. Here is what a "January Mallard" looks like. I got up one morning in late January and drove over to a park nearby. This was taken at the pond at the local library. It was about 20 degrees and I couldn't feel my fingers by the time I shot this one. You can clearly see the difference in the beak color between the drake and the hen.

Thanks, that may help me with birding!

P.S. Pardon my asking, but did I see your eagle head on one of the CinC toutorials?

I don't remember where I got the avatar but I don't think it is from a tutorial. I don't think I know enough to actually post a tutorial. I'm usually the one reading the tutorial.

No intent to suggest you swapped it from the tutorial, but just in case you're curious https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tu...htm#calculator
