    Circus Family

Quite some time ago, I was asked to shoot the last presentation of the
season. I took some 487 photographs.

They bought everything but 14 that were not sharp enough and these 4
    portraits because:
    • my missing tooth is visible! (how can one see a missing tooth?)
    • I don't like my hair…
    • I don't like the smile… I forgot the last one.

    C&C Welcome! All SOOC.
    Ze jongleur and clown:

MC, clown, and jack-of-all-trade, and father:

    Circus Family

Tickets, popcorn, novelties and poney rides:

    Ze trapésiste and mama:

I would not change anything in the first two images. The third one has a greenish light by her right shoulder and a red one above her head both of which are a bit distracting but easy to get rid of. The fourth portrait might benefit from a 3x4 crop with a bit more room added at the top and possibly on the left. Say crop it so the eyes are a 1/3 from the top, the shoulder is a 1/3 from the bottom. Otherwise the lady looks too tall.

If I was #2 or #3, I'd be very pleased with the photo. But 469/487 is just an unbelievable success rate.

Nice work on all, but for me the snaggle-toothed kid and No. 2 of the MC/dad are gob-smackingly good!

Hi Kim, that will come… don't you ever worry!

I must share thou, I am not fond of the circus...not sure about those clowns ;-)
Last week, I was shooting at a Chevrolet dealer. As a pro, I had to produce a
good session of car photos. I would have rather shoot at Audi or else because
I don't dig at all american cars… but a shoot is a shoot. The only reasons I still
    like circus photography:
    • It is a gathering of people wanting to have a good time and still believe in magic,
    • Flash being forbidden, it is a great technical challenge.

Hi dem, as mentioned, these are SOOC, this implies that after preview,
since they were not selected, I was not going to spend time on them. I
agree though with the comment on the little girl picture.

But 469/487 is just an unbelievable success rate.
If your making a living, the end product will have a chance to sell only if
its good, excuses don't sell! I am happy when I have no more than 5%
rejected takes (from MY filtering) under most conditions,

However, a good friend of mine had a private concert at his place last
Monday: Chris Jagger (Mick's brother) and 2 musicians. I was there with
the chosen tools when I saw the lighting condition were so bad that I did
not shoot a single frame. The stage was 18 feet by 12 with three spots:
    • one on the main artist, a 100w spot in purple and
    • two 100w white spots on the back wall, The violin and bass players were
left in the dark!!! …and Chris says that there should be no flash!

These are you rejects, Kodiak? I'd be pretty happy with any one of them.

A shame they didn't allow flash. I invested in a small battery powered light (daylight balanced) just for instances like that. You did a wonderful job under these circumstances Kodiak

These portrait were shot close to a daylight source so no flash needed.
