My favourite technical review site gives both the F4 and the F2.8 4 star ratings Nothing seems to get 5 and I don't know of any other zooms that get 4. All I would add to choosing is consider weight, do you really need F2.8 and the reports of focus breathing on the F2.8 not going in the right direction. As it's mentioned I suspect it's a bit extreme. A focal length that increases as a lens is focused closer like the F4 is in my opinion much to be preferred.
I've never seen any tests on these lenses with a converter on but have seem one on the F4 300mm prime. The 1.4x doesn't make much difference to the resolution a 2x does. This may be why Nikon do one in between if I remember correctly.

Trace,
Great photos, it really shows the quality of the lens and truly helps me make a decision. I know there will be some overlap in my focal ranges, and perhaps not getting as much extra reach than what I have, but I will have a really great lens with many more capabilities than I have now.
Thanks!!
