Canon 40D Shutter Dial not working "Please help"!

Good morning CiC Forum,

I have a problem with my Canon 40D's Shutter dial whereas it does not want work what so ever, it makes the usual clicking sounds when turning left and right but it will not select any shutter speed nor any of the other setting it is used for "which is quite a lot" deeming my camera useless to say the least !

The camera has a battery grip fitted, but the camera's shutter dial will not work while using it or not.

Is there anyone out there that can please help with this issue.

Hi, Thanks for the reply although the shutter dial is not slipping on the wheel, it click when turning left and right ?

The shutter dial is nothing more than a fancy rotary switch. If something has happened with the contacts, then the camera needs to be sent to the Canon for repairs (likely the replacement of the switch module). The clicking is nothing more than a spring activated detent and may or may not be integrated with the switch contacts. Just because you get the clicking doesn't indicate that the switch is not broken.

There is an off chance that the camera has a firmware issue. Remove the main battery and leave it out for a couple of days (allow internal battery to run down (unless you can remove it). This will force the camera into a hard reboot (a modern digital camera is really a computer that takes pictures). If this fixes the problem, great, if not; off to Canon for repairs.
