    Australian plant success

I have a very pathetic spindly wind blasted Waratah that has finally offered up a single flower. They grow like weeds in NSW but although the climate where I live is warm enough I have planted it in a very heavy clay soil which it seems to dislike.

Actually it looks like it is starting to win the struggle and may do better next year.

Not a great shot but I am just happy at being able to take it at all.

Awww...so pretty...I tried to grow this in my garden in Oz. I finally gave up. Young son killed most of my plants with good solid neglect. I always thought they are bright red, not pink like this one...very very pretty.

Yes it is a beautiful flower well captured. I don't think I've ever seen one before. Mention Waratah and I think of the NSW rugby side which is of course the enemy around my way. Fancy naming a rugby side after a pretty flower !

Have you never heard of flower power? Anyway Dave at least we have one common enemy...

Izzie they are pretty (not the rugby players - well not to me) and the red possibly is a bit darker than the photo indicates.

Thanks Dan they are great blooms and well worth trying to coax the tree to flower..

Never seen a flower like this. It's a very nice photo. Definitely a keeper.

Good shot, Paul, but the colour is way off. Waratahs are bright red - except for those that are white.

Waratahs thrive in sandy soil, and they are pyrogenic so you may need to have a bonfire if you want it to flower again

    Re: Australian plant success

Hi Greg thanks for your comment. I have just checked the colour and the photo of the flower is a bit lighter and a slightly on the blue side but is not that far off. It is possibly a fancy coloured cultivated hybrid of the ones you see growing in the wild.
