I would just like to go on record that I didn't suggest that.

I wonder if you agree with me that the canoe and people don't stand out enough in the version that is entirely monochrome. If so, brighten those areas of the image before converting to monochrome. Then adjust the level of brightness after seeing the results in monochrome. In my version shown below, I initially brightened those areas to the same degree. When reviewing the image after it was converted, I realized that the front of the canoe was too bright. So, I removed some of the brightness in that area.

Mike, my apologies. I misread the statement in your post.

I do agree that the canoe doesn't stand out as well in my version. You may have just cleared something up for me. I attempted
some adjustments, but 'after' I converted the image. Didn't realize that I should do them prior to the conversion. This could
explain why I don't get my conversions looking quit right....thank you.

    Your edits #3 - #4 and Mike's B&W look good Rita. I misunderstood Mike's comment too

    No apologies needed, Rita.

It doesn't matter in the slightest whether you fine-tune the adjustments before or after converting so long as the results are effective. However, it's easier to make certain masks, depending on the image, before converting. This image is a good example of that when creating the mask to affect only the canoe, the people and their reflection.

If it's easy to make the mask after converting, the outcome will be just as effective. Indeed, subtle burning and dodging of the forest in this image would probably be easier to do after converting.

I should clarify my previous post that certain masks are easier to make before converting at least when using certain software but perhaps not all software. As an example, I seem to remember reading that when using the Google/Nik Silver Efex Pro as a plug-in, applying a control point to make a mask actually changes the original tones of the color image rather than the monochrome tones of the converted image. I haven't used that software enough to know whether my recollection about that is accurate. Hopefully someone who has used it a lot can comment about this.

Being an ole fashioned kinda guy, I'm partial to the Color Range command to make selections.

To change colors, I like the saturation adjustment layer...https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...n+photoshop+CC

Thank you for the extra post Mike, very helpful.

Chauncey, thank you for the links, I will take a look at them. I played with the saturation adjustment on the posted edits but I have never used
the Color Range command. Look forward to playing with it.
