    Cattle Chute and Shoot

Two images of fall in my part of the world. Taken at opposite ends of the day.

I am slowly trying to wean myself off my addiction to abandoned barns. My prior post was an abandoned house. The loading chute is abandoned but made of smaller pieces of wood. In the hillside shot there is just a small abandoned plow. Small steps.

Both photos are very appealing. It's interesting to realize how much less appealing the second one would be without the chute.

John is right… cool comp! …though the saturation is "over" real.

Trevor in the second image it looks like you got a 2 for 1, besides the plow just above the fencing there is another piece of machinery.

I disagree, Kodiak. The colors can be exactly like that in that part of the world.

    Then, let's agree to disagree!
If I may, I am from that part of the world and I worked in that part of Canada.
Before I replied to the post, just in case, I checked our image bank in Montréal
and the work we did in Northern BC and Yukon in the National Archives and, it
    was as I remembered.

Beautiful bright lights and splendid colours plus the tones of dusk and dawn. The
shots I (we) shot then were on 100 ASA chrome slides for good colours, contrast,
and punch… (no Eastman stuff!) and the dry grass was in tones of beige plus an
accent given by the early or late hour of the day.

It is clear to me that these two shot are very good takes but it is also clear to
me that in both cases, there is a yellow over toning that reveals some degree
of over saturation; this even considering the low sun position.

Absolutely spot on observation. I appreciate the saturation may not be to all tastes

The colours and a lot of other aspects are not real and hence the scene is not true to reality. The problem being more precise about what is changed is that I muck about with the image to such an extent I cannot recall exactly what was done. The viewer will have to accept, I hope, I was not aiming for a documentary image but my interpretation of the scene. The viewer may find the final image good, bad or indifferent but I have no control over that and can only please my own aesthetic sense when processing.

Keep up the critique and comment. Maybe there is hope I can be trained to see in other ways.

I have only visited that part of the world. Perhaps my wonderful memories of visiting it have led to a romanticized (unrealistic) memory of the colors.

I have known your uploaded images for about a year and your edits are usually very nice Trevor. You have an artistic approach to your images and I like it. So , if I were you I would stick with it, because this is what you are

PS. Please see images taken with Singh-Ray Gold-N-Blue Polarizer on the internet, please see the colors on those images. They are lovely photos and they are all shot with artistic approaches. So, if there is such a polarizer filter with a well known brand , this means there are people who use them. IMO you should be one of them. I'm hoping to be one of them in the future too

Your memories are not that far off. And memory is a funny thing; reality filtered through experience and emotion.

As for the colour in this image I see things as they should be, not as they are. Which also applies to my waistline.

We had a professional photographer come and judge at our club a few months ago. He made a remark that I found interesting. He said that when selling his prints he adjusts the saturation slightly depending on the country he is sending them to. For instance in general the Australians prefer more saturated prints than the NZ market.

Trevor the second shot (my preference) would look good as a panorama cropped above the tops of the distant yellow trees and a slither taken off the right to avoid chopping a poor animal in half.

Trevor, my vote goes to #1...The addition of the blueish clouds and the mixture of shadows and lights is just beautiful in my eyes. Nicely caught. The second one is nice too but let others choose that one if they wish. I like the rustic mood of the first.

A couple of nice ones, Trevor. You can really make old stuff look interesting. I really like the second shot though I'd consider cropping the sky out of the top. And, hey, you finally at least shot a field that's not abandoned

And this also applies to the scene without the background vista. When shooting this I started tight on the chute, filling the frame with the chute alone. Just not what I wanted So I shot some other stuff in the vicinity; walking off a short distance to do so. When I turned to come back was when I realized, that like a lot of my barn shots, the prairie vista is an essential element to put the man made stuff in context.
