RED WINE Garden in Autumn by Kodiak

In the working contract we have with the winegrower, 3 items are left to do:
    • the autumn scenes… this is today's post,
    • the red wine harvest… that should come in the next week, and
    • the winter scenes, hopefully with snow (this is not Canada!).

So, Olivier and I went to photograph some autumn scenes of the wine
gardens, the property, and some details that that like so much we do.

Here is my "harvest" of today:

Beautiful images, Kodiak, I can see these being used to illustrate a vintner's advertising literature. Just a couple of points:

#1. I would remove the wire from the top left corner. There appears to be a blue-ish dot in the bottom right corner.
The house and other buildings are sloping down to the left.

#2. Lovely backlighting but I feel the picture needs to be a little brighter overall - more like the bightness level of #3.

    Thanks Greg,

These are almost SOOC. I just hurry the preselection before Olivier comes
back from the party so he could see them prior to bed time.

Of course, your observations are correct… (plus a few more!) ;-) These will
have to go through the whole workflow before delivery to my client.

Hello Kodiak: You have captured some lovely colours and textures. Number 4, with the grapes and leaves, is particularly nice.

A lovely series Kodiak and not a bad way to spend some time with your son

#6 is my favorite of the group.

Kodiak are you sure your not using Fuji Valvia slide film? Lovely full rich colours and #4 in particular reminds me of the good old days (and the horrendous expense) of slide film.

    "Almost" SOOC, Kim.
At the time of the year, leafs stiffen as they change colour, and they often
have an angle to the light that provokes nasty specular highlights. One knows
ahead, prior to shutter release, that there will be some pp sweat involved there!
#3 was an very bad case of this, thanks for your comment.

"Almost" SOOC… this is honest enough.

I think it was called Velvia… but no, Fujichrome for the 35mm format and, for
the medium and large format cameras, Ektachrome.

Velvia was not used so much in the industry because of its too strong contrast
and saturation. This film was more intended for non-pro use, though…

When Kodak took the front row in the late 60s with their Kodakrome, not all
were convinced of the results of this red based emulsion. They made a fortune
using the easy way out. And when Fuji brought their green base slide films,
then the pros rushed to it and that did hurt Kodak who saw the niche was lost.
Their answer was to try to keep the medium and large format market with the
blue base emulsion of the Ektachrome… that was a good film. Fuji then produced
the same larger format film in Fujichrome and picked up momentum… but it
was already too late for Kodak EASTMAN.

Yes, you are correct it is (or was, even though I have some in the fridge) velvia - valvia was a mistype. It was popular in NZ as it enhanced the greens we pride ourselves on..

However the contrast and saturation in your images did remind me of it.

A very nice set Kodiak. I hope your client is happy and appreciates the control in the backlit shots. Nice work.
