    Very lovely instant Greg!
Try to see if you could tame down the whole scene leaving the birds
    in the same tonal range…

It's toned down a lot from the original raw image Daniel, I will give it another try, my pp skills are not what you would call top of the class

A well-caught moment, Greg. Good DoF but I wonder about the circular thing at the end of the hen's beak. Is that something she is offering the chick, or something in the background?

In the background mate and probably the sunlight highlighting the moisture on one of many, many native hen bombs. It was a minefield out there.

Can you get close enough to try using fill flash? Always a problem to lift the shadows when the birds are dark coloured and in sunlight.
Nice relationship between chick and mom.

    Re: Eye contact

I like both versions Greg but the last one really fitted it in well. You really got it there. It looks like the mother hen was teaching the little kid a pointer or two on what to eat and how to feed herself...very good capture...

Have to say, it's one that I'm pretty happy with.

Second one is a definite improvement. Still one or two highlights in the BG that you could eliminate for me but a great capture.

Yes, the second one is more pleasing without the bright green grass. What a great moment to capture! You deserve to be happy with it.
