Two different hairstyles

I was driving by a dirt road, when I saw these guira cuckoos. It was not possible to take a photo of the two guys together because they like different things and they are inconcilable. One wants to be a CEO of great company and the other dreams of being a rock singer.
Critics and comments are welcome, as always.

Hi Antonio,

Good to hear from you again, I'm glad one of us is still shooting.

These are very good, as I have come to anticipate from you.

Shooting RAW with your Canon SX50, you achieve results that (I'm sure) many would assume were shot with a full DSLR, so I'm not entirely sure I believe your final auto-signature 'quote', you certainly know how to leverage the best results from your compact equipment.


I know you usually like to receive something technical from me and I had to look really hard (and mine the EXIF data) to find it.

There is a small halo (really only visible at 1:1 pixel matching on my screen) around some of the contrasty edges; e.g. the lower edge of the CEO's beak and the top of the Rock Star's beak and the EXIF data shows a sharpen radius of 1.0 px on the CEO (and 1.2 px on the Rock Star).
Personally I would normally have used a much narrower sharpen radius, say 0.3 or 0.4 px to avoid halos altogether.

However, I also might have built up the sharpening in 3 USM passes, starting with say; 1.2 px (at a low amount), then 0.6 px, then 0.3 px, with successively increasing amounts - now since that won't show in the EXIF data, it is possible you also did this and only the first pass shows - please advise if this was the case.


Once I'd got into a critique mindset, one other thought occurred to me; the crop maintains the 3:2 aspect ratio of the capture (at 1500 x 1000 as posted) and in both cases, if mine, I might have cropped both to a 1300 x 1000 px aspect ratio, starting from left edge on CEO and centred for the Rock Star. I suggest this as I feel it would give more balanced compositions.


I am being really pernickety even mentioning these things, but you did PM me to ask for comment and I hope they are helpful - but do bear in mind I was sorely tempted to just re-iterate the other comments of "great shots", especially given they were taken at an equivalent focal length of 1200mm (and subsequently cropped some more) and they are still this sharp - I know how tricky it is shooting at those kinds of lengths (with my Nik P510).

I tried to take a photo of a guira cuckoo that was over a post of a fence, but the autofocus of my camera failed (it was focusing the background, instead of bird).
Before I could focus manually, the bird flied away. Then I saw the CEO and the rock star and I took the photos.
