Thanks all for your comments.
Kodiak, they are the worlds most effective predators. No wonder they can smile.
David and Dave, I have tried many times as well but you cannot chase these. They move too quickly. I was looking for birds, hence the long lens, when those two presented themselves. Hand held, that's why the quality is not brilliant.

If this is not good quality for you, if these are mind, I'd smiling from ear to ear. Very nice shots especially #4 -- it has that smile quality in it...

Re: Common Darter
These are so good I may have to dash out and buy a Tokina 100mm macro. Mind you I reserve most of my credit for the photographer.

Great series John and No 3 is superb, it's the first shot of a couple in flight I have seen.

I love the last shot. I did a double take when I saw his smiling face. You have really captured the beautiful lace pattern of the wings.

Re: Common Darter
Thanks for the additional comments all. Sorry for the delay I responding. Life is a bit busy at the moment.
LP, the Tokina is an excellent lens. I had wanted the Tamron equivalent but it was so popular that it was in short supply. I searched for something else and found rave reviews for the Tokina. It and the Tamron are claimed to be better than the Nikon equivalent particularly since unlike the Nikon, they both rely on internal focusing which means that you can use a CPL filter without it rotating as you focus. Worth considering.
