Cooking dinner at school - Trongsa Bhutan

We had a short visit to the Serubling Higher Secondary School in Trongsa, Bhutan. Most of the senior students (400 students at the school) board there and the kitchen prepares dinner for them. This shot was taken in the kitchen as one of the four cooks was browning some garlic on a wood fired stove. The only light was coming in from the open door behind him. The shot is quite noisy and I have a bit of motion blur from the cook stirring the pot.

This is another one of those instances I wish I had my D800 and my fast lenses with me. Shot at 1/30th, stopped down 2/3 from wide open at ISO 3200. Could I have done any better with the gear I had with me; probably not...

That is a great shot, Manfred, I don't think you could hope for any better, period. The graininess and the harsh light in the door way only add to the atmosphere in my opinion. The only little thing that bothers me is the piece of wood poking into the bottom left hand frame.

I wonder why the cook has his mask positioned over his mouth but not his nose. Considering that he was browning garlic, I would think that he would want it positioned also over his nose.

This is a good shot Manfred, considering the light you have to cope with...it is almost like I can smell the atmosphere there, the heat and the burning wood. One day I'll have a smell-a-vision pooter screen...
