Edit is OK… always want to learn!

    Re: Against the Sky

    ISO 3200? …splendid!

You got a perfect atmosphere light… very cool mood.
Much too soft and a weak composition… but again, this was a test. Wasn't it?
Try to imagine what a fantastic shot this could have been if shot sharp and
    properly composed.

If you have your finger on the trigger… try to make it worth it! …cause one never
    knows… even by testing.

    Kodiak,

Thanks for the comments and critique. I'm planning a few lowlight excursions where I'll actually take the tripod with me. This shot was taken on the way to work, so just taking advantage of those few available seconds.

Raining here for a few days now, I tend to experiment too, but not on pushing ISO but techniques -- e.g. black card. Anyway, experiment is a good exercise. Pushing the ISO...interesting. Can't wait to see how far you can go with that...

Thanks Izzie, I went to the extreme using Hi ISO (12,500) and although workable (needed a lot of noise reduction) I think 5,000 is more than I want to use; at least in very low light.

Well...I'd be interested to see what you can come up with when you reached ISO 5000...

Nice John! Someday I'll have a camera that can handle that ISO :-)

Thanks for the comments Kim, part of the success in controlling the noise is in the post processing.

John, I would be interested to hear abut your post processing workflow with high ISO images that keeps the noise in check. I would imagine that it would all start with a well exposed image

    Hi Shane,

Sorry for the late response. Yes I do try to start with a well exposed image. My NR process depends on the intensity of the noise and I can usually correct with LR. If the noise is intense, then I will process a copy with NIK software Dfine2 NR process, there are two methods for noise reduction; Control Points or Color Ranges. Control Points use plotting points that set an area that can be adjusted for color or contrast noise, you can either add or reduce noise in the areas set. Color Ranges allow you to apply plotting points based on specific colors within the image, you can adjust the color/contrast by bands of color.

ISO 4000, 1/20sec, f/4.8 handheld, noise reduction with NIK software.
