Took a day off the hiking trails to ride the rails!

Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Mountain Railroading at its finest!

Back on the trails tomorrow and looks like a storm brewing. Might be a couple of days getting back to this but I'd be happy for any and all comments as you see the need.

You did not ride the train?! It was a wonderful experience if you did. And yes, here in Missouri it is going to rain from today till Monday...5 days of rain, on and off...stay where you are and have a good time while you are at it. This is a beautiful shot, Terri...I like it that you included the water down there. Everytime I look at how steep this is, I feel creepy crawlies on my skin. No suggestion. This is an excellent shot.

Didn't know about that train. Just had a look on the website (www.durangotrain.com). The videos on the 'Scrapbook' page are beautifully produced. Whole experience looks wonderful.

Nice shot Terry. Everthing about it just works - the train of course, the rock formations, the river, the colours and the sky. A well composed shot IMO.

In the summer of 1968, I worked in Silverton as a teenager greeting the people getting off the train to attract them to my employer's restaurant for lunch. I played the town drunk, a natural role even at that age.

One of those potentially disjointed scenes with two main elements. The river in the bottom left and train top right.

But in this case, the diagonally placed lines of foliage, and rocks, nicely join both competing subjects together.

Geoff, a great observation.

I was lying in wait for this shot. I thought the two (as you put it) main elements absolutely had to be present for the shot to show what it was supposed to. This is a mountain railroad and while I have shots of it travelling through unbelievably scenic views (a lot of them of the mountains rising to each side) I thought I needed it to be kind of the opposite. The train rising dramatically (and not just a little precipitously) to really show what a mountain railroad is about.

A unique thing about that train is that it will stop along the way to drop-off and pick-up fisherman who are usually fly fishing the stream below for trout...

Of course, the drop-off and pick-up points have slightly easier access to the stream below...

We were told that the name is based on the silver gravel used in construction.
