    Allen or "Lurchy" is fine

    The milky way- first attempt

I surprised myself tonight, turned out better than i first thought. It is in no way a perfect shot. I will keep on experiment with the settings and such to get it better!

For those who are interested, the maths behind getting the idealish shutter speed is the following:

600 divided by the focal legnth

E.G, i used 28mm focal length so i divided 600 by 28which equaled to was 21.4, but my camera wont do 21 secs with out a shutter release, so i used 20 secs.

    Hope that helps.

    F/2.8, 20secs, iso 3200

Edit is OK… always want to learn!

    Yes, very nice!

If I may suggest, to possibly come to a better rendition, try the next take
at ISO 800 if technically feasible (I don't know the gear at your disposal).
This setting will reduce the noise ratio and permit vivid colour capture.

Hi Allen, your shot looks great to me and I found the information for calculating the exposure time interesting - thank you for that.

I've never tried to capture the Milky Way, you have inspired me to give it a try!

Allen, very nice first attempt, thanks for supplying your information, I'm sure I'll use that when I get brave enough to attempt this kind of shot. Well done.

Great first attempt Allen! Like Chris said this is quite inspiring but I have a question about your calculation and choice of ISO.

I get the 600 divided by the focal length but how does ISO factor into the calculation? I see that Kodiak has suggested ISO 800 for this shot but why not something even lower? Are you using ISO to get you to the desired exposure time? If so why not use a smaller aperture like f8?

Very nice shot, Allen...remind me of my failed shot... You are in the right place here coupled with good weather condition.
