Nikon D3300 rear info screen bug...

    Hi guys,

A friend has just bought this camera and asked me to put it through it's paces so to speak. he's got the 18-55mm kit lens and whilst this was attached there were no issues.

He also bought the 55-300mm lens and the issue is this; after the 55mm focal length the rear info screen overrides the ability to remain off, which is set within the menu options.

The result is that after every shot, the rear info screen is flashing on, straight into the photographer's eye. Not only is this annoying, but probably bad for the eyes under certain conditions.

Please can anyone else who is having this issue PM me, as I need to collate information to get a firmware update from Nikon, ASAP.

    Thanks in advance,

    Mark Fleming

Have you/he/she tried a factory reset Mark?

I wonder if it got 'confused', perhaps if lens was changed with camera powered? (I have accidentally done this - although I got away with it)

A factory reset might restore normal operation, however, the chances are you will have already "been there and done that".

It can be turned off, in the instruction manual

    Dave,

Yeah, we've tried that and more. This is the weirdest bug in any camera that I've ever come across. I've e-mailed Nikon and got a confused reply. They've tried to replicate the issue with just the kit lens. There is no problem with this lens. It only occurs after the 55mm mark, i.e. 55-300mm lens that also came with my friends kit.

I'm uploading a video as I write this, that will show the problem in more detail.

If you go to the Playbook Menu, very top of the list, choose Playback Display and you should have a list of items that ca be displayed (image only, highlights, RBG histogram, Shooting Data, and Overview). You can select which of the items to not display, I believe Playback Image is the only one you cannot change.

    John,

It's got nothing to do with anything within any of the menu system. It's a bug. You can see in the above video that I go into the menu to show that this setting was and continues to show that it is set to "Off."

It needs a firmware update. Nikon UK have got back to me to say that they've replicated the problem (which means it's in all of them) and that an investigation is now under way.

I'm just surprised it's not all over the internet.

    Mark,

I think the reason it's not all over the internet is because most users are looking for instant feedback, you can't chimp without an instant view of your image. When I set mine to display off, only the image just photographed appears; of course I was using a 70-300mm lens so it may be lens specific. As I said, when I set mine to "display off" only the image I just photographed appeared at all focal lengths.

    Good luck.

    John,

You have and use this camera, yes? With no issues that are stated above? Even after just pressing the shutter half way down to focus, does the information screen come on, with it's brightness shining right in your eye?

    Mark,

Yes, the information screen does come on. I rarely used it in lowlight so it was probably not an issue for me.

    A; You acknowledge the issue.
B; What has lowlight got to do with anything?
C; So, if you have no issues with this, why post in this thread?

    I'm trying to help people.

    You're confusing the issue.

I've made it so clear, a hedgehog could understand it, ffs.

    Mark,

Not trying to confuse the issue, just don't have an issue with it. Hope it works out for you.

    Quick update if anybody is interested or owns this model;

    Reply from Nikon UK,

We have not heard from you concerning your request for support in the 72 hours since we sent a response. Consequently, we have changed the status of your question to Solved.

    My reply to that;

    Guys,

The issue has not been solved. Far from it. Indeed the issue was so problematic that my friend has since decided to return the camera and get his money back, and to reconsider Nikon products in the future.

    Regards,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Just caught up with this thread and watched the video - as you say, definitely a bug.

Can I ask if you could advise us all what your friend's D3300 camera Firmware version(s) are please?
Just that it'll help others to have these facts documented here.

    Thanks, Dave

    PS Cute hedgehog

Re: Nikon D3300 rear info screen bug...

    Dave, sure mate.

It's the original firmware straight from the factory/shop/box. There have been no updates and even though this issue has been replicated and therefore acknowledged by Nikon UK and the message passed on to Japan, don't hold your breath.

As I've said above my mate has taken it back (to Jessop's Manchester Arndale) and got his money back.

The only reason that this came to light was the fact that he's quite a "savvy" guy and that he got the bundle kit lenses; 18-55mm and the 55-300mm kit in the same box. As you see above there is no problem with the 18-55mm lens, so people who are going to want a longer focal length in the future are going to be stuck with this issue.

Now, I've dealt with Nikon for years with hardly any problems at all. They've been fast in dealing with issues and repairs for me with my old F3 to my F90x. Then came the digital stuff.

What really is giving me the arse with this, is the fact that this camera model is designed for the beginners market and in communication, I'm being treated as such.

Do they treat all "beginners" this way?

It's like "Shut up and go away, it's a budget camera and doesn't matter."

    I'll be ringing them tomorrow.
