These bright green or blue flies do produce a range of colour variations depending on the light angle.

Hi Geoff, yes I agree, the image if I remember wes shot in afternoon light, where as this one from earlier in the year was shot in the morning.

The green is a much darker shade, I wonder if age has anything to do with it? or gender? the first one is female and second one male!

The green does indeed change in colour as they age. It goes more 'coppery' in tint.
Do you see any of those similar looking but longer legged Dolichopus species. With a narrower body. They also change with the light; and with those long legs they make an attractive photo.
