    I loved the shot John, it looks great

    If you try some noise reduction in the sky selectively , you might get rid of banding.It usually helps. If it was my image I would crop half of the empty space on the right side to make it look less centered but it is really personal preference, the image looks nice as is anyway.

    I'm confused, John. The only effect I can imagine of the polarizer in this situation is to let about 1 1/2 to 2 stops less light into the lens. I don't understand why that would be helpful when the sun was so low in the sky.

    Mike, I might be wrong but I think John was trying to keep the lens from the bad effect of eclipse . I don't know if such a thing possible though , because it is beyond my technical knowlegde about lenses. He also didn't use the viewfinder to shoot, I think he used the live view in order to keep his eyes.
