Shot this today in a public garden, a hot sunny day, far too bright. I shot into the sun, but got my assistant to hold a round mesh diffuser (that's the white background you see) behind the tulip (between the sun and the tulip so it was backlit) This shielded the flower from the direct sun, but gave it plenty of soft light. I used a Canon 430EX with a Gary Fong Lightsphere on to get the front light exposure. IOW it had a strong light both front and rear. 1/250sec, ISO200, f/14, Canon 50D, 24-105L. Not much PS processing, but I applied a soft filter with Optik Verve.

Rob, This is really cool, looks a little over exposed on the top, but I don't think there is much you can do shooting in direct sunlight.

Thanx Rob. It was tricky gettting the light right because it was very strong from behind, and I was using flash from the front. The trick is to balance them so that you get an even light. I didn't quite get it right in camera here. This one below is modified a bit in PS and shows more detail. And the one below that is at 150% - you can see the detail it captures, even in very bright light. I think it's not bad for a shot taken outdoors, in a brisk breeze, in very bright sun, with a gardener marching towards me wanting to know what the hell I was doing crouched in the dirt on his flower-bed!

Luuvly...and it is. The first post is by far the best. The overexposure at he top of the flower is put to very good effect. You can feel the freshness. You are a dab hand at these flora shots. A real Canon man's Percy Thrower. I have a couple of flora shots on the camera at the moment and will try to process later.....enter the Canon man's Wurzel Gummage
