You can import the images to any drive you want.

New computer and it's running Windows 7? I thought all new ones were Windows 8.1. New laptop I bought last week is 8.1.
Anyway, I also would put my files on the large E: drive. In fact if it's external, as it appears, I would simply plug it into the old file pc and copy the files to it then bring it back to the new pc.

William, I have also just (still lots to do) built a new system using Windows 7 and something I have not yet addressed is how I will deal with 'backing up files'.

I see there's an option that I keep getting informed about but have not looked at yet but it MAY be best to know your intention at the start.

Be sure to put your Lightroom catalogue on the ssd. There is no need for it to reside on the same disk as your images, and you will certainly get performance benefits.

Not everyone likes Windows 8 yet...I just went to the process of reformatting my desktop and hubby cannot find the Windows 7 he installed in it years ago it seems now...went out to buy another Windows 7 and cannot find in the largest pooter store here anymore, nor in Walmart. Same with Microsoft Office lower version than 2013. My laptop is a fairly brand-new ASUS and I have particularly ordered it to have Windows 7. It is like an old shoe -- feels comfortable with constant use.

It was my son, an IT guy that chose components for my build...is not a fan of windows 8 for a desktop, and version 10 isn't out yet. Like Izzie says, if the shoe fits, wear it.

The D drive is a temporary file transfer thingy...under scratch disc I have checked F SSD.
There is no place in the performance area to check C & D drive.

Izzie - M/soft stopped selling end user copies of 7 some time ago and now they have stopped providing Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, and Windows 7 Ultimate licenses to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including PC partners and systems builders.

This means you’ll only be able to buy a computer running Windows 7 as long as stock lasts or any running Windows 7 Professional.

Does anyone like Win8 yet? The following is a comment by the moderator on another forum about Win8:

"Win 8 is the worst OS ever put on the market in my opinion - it makes Vista look like a rare jewel. Microsoft deserves to have it's stock halved for that abomination."

BTW, the man is very knowledgeable about computer systems - he retired from the chip making business to do photography full time.

Sorry I meant C & E drive. Go to 'edit > preference > performance > scratch disk and their tick mark two or more drives. In my case all my drives, i.e., C / D / E / F are visible.

Love the desktop search- just start typing and up comes programs, documents, etc.
It's faster than Win-7 to start.
Lightroom Photoshop and lots of programs all run fast & well.
Press the "Windows" key for fast access to desktop and other shortcuts.
Wouldn't go back to 7...

Glad i'm not the only one here that loves Windows 8.
My laptop came with it, but my desktop still runs Windows 7. I'm seriously considering upgrading it.

Ah installed Win 8.1 Pro (64 bit) on my self built PC in January (not a touch screen PC). Cost me £42 for a single use disc. End of the next month came the extra updates for 8.1 . Ah also installed Classic Shell. It's like Vista/Win 7 in its layout. Ah now have 3 choices - 2 desktops and a "Program Files/Apps" page.

Desktop 1 is the Classic Shell, pretty familiar?



Desktop 2 is a customized version of Win 8's original start page for quick access tae frequently used programs. Accessed from the Windows key on my (7 year old) keyboard, so yer hardware needn't be the very latest. Clicking on the wee white arrow takes ye tae the Apps page. ..



"Program Files+Apps", is the straight "Apps" listings but all on one page and alphabetically listed. If ye swipe the cursor tae the top left screen corner the Desktop 1 thumbnail appears, clicking that takes ye back there. Ye really can't ask for more...



Nobody likes change. All systems have their initial faults/dislikes/hates with every iteration. When Win XP was introduced comments ranged from toys r us, cartoonish, childish etc. Around 11.5 % of the XP systems were returned for faults of varying types (perceived or otherwise). Folk liked what they had ...and what was comfortable for them tae use.

The much-maligned Vista actually had only about 9% problems, despite the raging in the press.

Ah think that Win 8.1 is a superb system; rock solid, very fast, logical, intuitive and simply a pleasure tae use. Everyone using Windows should get a copy.

PS Ah'm not ignoring or glossing over the original Win 8 iteration but that's what happens when ye keep asking for focus group opinions and not real world , real people advice...

I have pretty much figured out how to work things now and as an FYI...
the damn thing runs at least twice as fast as my old one. Doing a happy dance.
