    Pier friends

Rather than spend all day sitting at my computer looking at all the great pictures being posted here on CinC, I thought I'd go down the pier and see what I could find of interest. I have a recently purchased NEX 7 that I'm using some old lenses on as the cost of film and developing was quickly sending me to the poor house.
    These were shot with a Nikkor-SC 5cm f1.4 lens.

Your focus and composition are fine but unfortunately you are shooting into the light so you have quite a bit of strong shadow areas. Often impossible to avoid though; unless you use flash and that isn't normally an option.

    Thanks Geoff.
What I'm really having fun with is seeing how good the old lenses I've got really are. These shots are right out of the camera.
This one has been played with a little, but to me it doesn't really tell the viewer just how sunny it really was/is out there today.

I'm sure if I'd used my D7000, it would have added some fill flash to the image.

Nice effort, I often find myself on the wrong side of the sun.

Nice shots, I like the close up as it shows more detail and the distracting stone bench is not there . Very nice yellow color on its head

On the first series, it will help if you put a space between the pictures so it doesn't look continuous. Imagine if you are uploading the same size, the shots will just flow from one to the other...

Anyway, my complaint over, I guess I want to play favourite and like the last one better with the edit. Unless I go to the zoo perhaps I wouldn't even know where to find a pelican to shoot here in St. Louis. It will be nice if you use the dodge tool to lighten up his eyes a tad...

So this one is better all around since I'm on the right side of the sun, there's no bench in the backround and the pelican has a gleam in his/her eye.

    Is that right?

It may not show how sunny it was, but is that the point of the picture ? To me the detail of the bird is the picture and so this one captures it better.....just a thought

All nice shots, I kind of like the shadows... I think they add to the images

The last one, with a different light angle looks good. You can actually create some interesting compositions by using shadows to your advantage when they are facing that way.

In this particular case you could probably have shown a full length shadow on the left; subject to not having any other problems getting in the way.

That is perfect. Good light on the bird plus an interesting shadow.

You might try cloning out the top right corner shadows and see if that looks better or worse. I'm not really sure. At the moment they possibly add a bit of 'balance' to the scene?
