    Mackinac Bridge

This is the big bridge with a funny name, Mackinac, (pronounced Mackinaw) that bridges the straights between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of the state of Michigan. It is 5 miles long (8.038 meters) and the main towers stand 552 feet (168.25 meters) above water level, (according to mackinabridge.org). I'm not generally much of an architecture photographer, but I did have a fine opportunity to give this subject a try.

IQ is not great with these, maybe with the first being the best of them in that regard, but please feel free to comment!

    1: Mackinac Bridge

    2Mackinac Bridge

    3Mackinac Bridge

4 This one is my favorite concept of the set, though it could have been better executed I'm guessing. Mackinac Bridge

    Thanks for looking!

Nick, that's some impressive bridge and a good attempt at a night shot of it.

Do you know why the IQ is not good?

Very familiar with the structure, I did the Mackinac Bridge Walk a few years ago.

The first one -- you do not mind me saying that the light that is near the third of the shot really bothered me. It is like putting a stop to the whole picture. Yes. #1 could be better. The rest of the shots are really good. I love #2 between 2 and 3 and #4 is very nice and colourful.

    Hi folks, thanks for viewing.

There could be several reasons for this including my general photography skills and also the bridge camera that shot the photos which can be noisy at low light, plus with the night shot, I recall having auto focus difficulties, and long ss made it blurry, I think.

Very familiar with the structure, I did the Mackinac Bridge Walk a few years ago.
Never done that myself. But it must be an interesting experience.

Izzie and Matt, I personally was not offended my the position of the light, but I can understand how one with more experience with architecture photography could be more observant about it. Oh well,

An interesting set of photos. Shooting the longer distance scenes on a brighter day when the air isn't quite so 'thick' would probably help to increase sharpness; but these are quite acceptable now.

With the last scene, I wonder if slightly toning down the brighter areas of reflection would tend to concentrate more on the bridge?

It's funny, I didn't even SEE the light until I read Izzie's post complaining about it. I was in awe of the fact you were able to find a location that allowed you to take a picture that was perfectly aligned with the bridge!
Nice set, I don't think the Golden Gate has anything on your bridge.

    Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the tip about the air being thick, as it probably was in the evening, I may not have had a chance to wait till day at that time, but it's a tip I had not quite got into my head till now

    AOA.
As many times as Iv'e been over the bridge I didn't now there was such a location till this year we stopped at a state park overlooking the bridge. I have sometimes wondered why the Golden Gate seems to be more famous? Maybe it's prettier

    Thanks all for the comments!

I was not complaining, I was just giving an opinion, besides that light can be removed with PP, but then I did not ask because it wasn't my shot. We can only suggest...

A handsome bridge Nick! This is the kind of scene that I would be tempted to shoot late afternoon on a tripod. If you can't wait until after sunset, use a rock to mark the location and return, setting the tripod up in the same location using the rock marker. By using the same camera angle and settings, get a capture of the bridge lights. Merging the after-dark (but not overexposed) lights with the late afternoon capture can give the lights a unique glow against the late day bridge detail.

The eternal question......Why is it the "Mackinaw" bridge and Fort "Mackinack"?

Izzie, All critique is a appreciated. You do not need to say..."pretty please... will you remove the light for me?"

    Frank, that's a creative idea.

Randy, I would think it was due to the various peoples that were up there at different times- British, Americans, Natives, French? It seems a number of folks had their turn owning the fort, from what I've heard

Thanks Mike. I'm glad you liked the pictures, and it's too bad you now have to be in Chicago- isn't it?
