    In the Space Between:

Was invited to a fine art exhibition a week ago. Final year art students at university exhibiting their work. The theme was “In the space between”.

Interesting to see how negative young people can interpret “the space in between”. Most had a negative connotation of the space between life and death. Some very somber exhibits.

Trying to understand the space in between without being so negative and seeing the beauty of the space in between I gave it a serious thought what I would have done to reflect the space in between.

I am no artist but I would rather have done something like this:

    In the Space Between:

Do you understand what is going on in this work?

    A manipulated photographic image.

Perhaps there was some profound discussion by the group that led to the selection of the theme. I would have taken the theme literally and looked for something embedded within some horizontally or diagonal structure.

At first glance, your image appears to convey movement, not sure though. Did any of the exhibits include titles or captions or were your views on the exhibited works based solely on the images?

    Re: In the Space Between:

I too would have been inclined to imagine a space bounded by something, for example the classic solar eclipse with the coronae streaking out radially. Or, similarly, a close-up of an eye-pupil and iris. Maybe a street devoid of vehicles, people and articial lighting. Perhaps a kaleidescope where the 'space' is filled with glitter, leading to a possible definition of "the space" as being an area that is not necessarily flat and monochromatic but simply more homogenous than it's surroundings?

I went out front and took a couple of snaps:

    Foveon Blue:

    In the Space Between:

    My Boring Front Yard:

    In the Space Between:

And the ever-popular view of Oak Alley Plantation, Vacherie, Louisiana:

    In the Space Between:

    A nice theme, I reckon.

Not quite sure what the image is? (a flower?) or how it fits into "in the space between" theme.

I like some of xpatUSA's examples though.

    Re: In the Space Between:

The students are final year students and were afforded the opportunity to let the imagination go. Anything that resembles the space between.
Not the physical space but rather the transitional space.

    All the works had captions.

This image is transition from fruit to seed to flower. A forever ongoing process of movement trough the life cycle. To better understand it you need to know a little about the flower. It is a Fairy Iris that flowers for less than 24 hours. A very delicate beautiful flower.

I would call my effort: “Tomorrow’s beauty”.

I would have been stumped for idea but I like the physical interpretation of Xpat.

Very literal interpretation of the theme, one that I might have considered for the "In the Space Between" exhibit and also having a positive connotation.

Thanks, Andre, now it is clear. So, to compete with that terrible flower shot (kidding!!!!) may I offer:

    In the Space Between:

Here we see today's shot of a kitchen cabinet about to transition into an empty space via the space "in between".

Do pardon my frivolous post, folks
