The Return to Pantanal - Thread one

Dear fellows, I returned to Pantanal on my recent vacations. Many of you might have followed the thread from last year's visit to Pantanal, but I think I shot quite different stuff this year.

Here are the first images. I will post more on further threads, as soon as I am able to process them.

Thanks for viewing and commenting. C&C are welcomed, as always.

1 - Marsh Deer - Still over 100km from our lodge, but the pantanal animals started to show at this point.

2 - Landscape shot while crossing a big farm.

3 - A Nelore (male). Some farms raise up to 100.000 of these! In the blurred background you can notice some of them...

4 - And here is our first sunrise. We were already in the boat!

Hi Otavio , nice colorful shots I like the colors and compositions in #2 and #4 very much. May I ask how you shot #4 on a boat, handheld?

PS. I don't know why I didn't see #5 and #6 when I looked at your thread for the first time I have to tell you that #5 is great

There are some good captures there Otivo. I noticed that once you click on the deer image once, it get's bigger, but the full details don't come out till you click the full size button, which only makes it very slightly bigger. I am wondering if this has to do with the display size at which you sharpened it; interesting. I also noticed that it does not look like you sharpened selectively, at least on the bull image, which made a grainy background.

All very nice Otavio but if I have to choose, it's 1,4 and 5 for me. 1 for the setting, 4 because the exposure is spot on and 5 because of the subtlety of colour - but perhaps a tad too much blue in 5. Very nice set.

+1 Mark's comment. Fantastic shots and never expect lesser from you. I like the beef, er, the cattle shot...

Hi, Binnur. Thanks for your reply and I am glad you liked them.

Regarding your question about #4: Yes, it was shot handheld, from inside a boat, @ 78mm focal length. This lens (Sigma 70-300mm) has no VR/IS, so the trick was using a high shutter speed, to counter the vibrationS (mine + Boat's). In this case, I used 1/1600s.

    Cheers,

A beautiful set Otávio! I had not seen the Marsh Deer or Nelore before and I had to look Pantanal up to find out where it is. My day has been enriched by learning several new things!

    Hi Nick,

This effect will be true of any picture viewed on screen, for the best results, it must be viewed at 100%, or 1:1 pixel matching between the size the image was uploaded (and output sharpened) at and the monitor screen.

    Unfortunately, a variety of things can ruin this for viewers;
    • Viewer having browser zoom dialled in (use Ctrl+0 to reset)
    • The picture not being uploaded at a sensible size (most of these are fine)
    • The picture not being sharpened after downsizing to the 'sensible size'
    • Uploading a large picture and relying on the web host to produce a smaller version (inevitably without the correct output sharpening) and linking that here
    • Uploading an image to TinyPic that is more 1600 pixels on longest edge (even if height < 1000 px)

That is why I recommend never uploading more than 1000 px tall, which Otávio has not, by the way.

The reason - many LCD screens are 1050 or 1080 px in height, but allowing for browser tool-bars, you may still need to hit F11 (on PC) to make the browser go in to 'full screen' mode to allow room, when you've hit the "F" key, or clicked the little square box (if not greyed out) to see the whole image at 100%.

    Hi Otávio,

My apologies for 'banging my drum' on this topic in your thread.

They are, as usual, a great set of images.

The one that works least well for me is #5 (A beautiful day), because there's no obvious subject, but I bet when you were there, it didn't feel like it needed one because you were 'caught in the moment'.

My favourite of the series is #3, no wait, #6 - or #4 - why do you make it so hard?

    Cheers, Dave

    Thaanks Dave and Otivo,
I thought that was what was happening, the full size view (click image>click full size button ) is the way you should look at images if you are interested to see them correctly I know, but thanks for explaining, and I had never figured found out the full screen F11 key function before I do not know of any other viewing issues that I am having, though I notice that some browsers have better picture quality than others.
