Puppy Strangles
We had not encountered Puppy Strangles in our years of working with dogs until just recently. Puppy Strangles is described in Wikipedia, "Puppy strangles is a disease of puppies, also referred to as puppy head gland disease, juvenile pyoderma and juvenile cellulitis." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_strangles
We recently have had five cases of this rare condition from different shelters. I won't post pictures of the puppies when they were suffering from this disfiguring and possibly fatal condition because, to tell you the truth, I don't think that anyone would enjoy seeing those images.
The condition can be easily alleviated with a shot of prednisone and a regimen of antibiotics. Our foster mom thought that she was going to lose little Daniel the night she received him from the shelter but, he is fine now, except that he lost some of the pigment in his nose...
Stanley was also a victim of Puppy Strangles.
Fortunately once the puppy is cured of this conditions there are no after effects...
I don't know why we had five instances of this rare condition within a few months time but, we are thankful that our vets and our foster moms stepped up to save the delightful little puppies...
Apparently Puppy Strangles is so rare that vets often misdiagnose the condition. Here are images of what the condition looks like. Warning: these images are gruesome...

Re: Puppy Strangles
Is the disease catch-able? Do they get it from another dog who has it should be the right question...sorry. I am glad these two survived. I did not clicked on the link yet and I do not think I want to...
