It's a very nice tail. It's a cape for when it's cold, a propeller to help him fling through the air, a weight to balance himself while climbing, and a very spiffy decoration Not a bad squirrel picture!

Nice shot. Like the way you have used the window to frame him/her.

    Hi Izzie,
Sometimes squirrels lay their tails over their back when they want to take a nap on a tree, and they seem to use them as a wind break sometimes. On red squirrels which I am more familiar with, (though this is a picture of a gray squirrel) you can see that they don't have the gray outer-coat hairs on their back and the top side of their tail, but on their sides and the bottom of their tail so when they can put their tail up against their back and make a complete, protective outer coat

The photo is even better than the tail. The tail is just enough out of focus to leave sufficient detail in it yet allow the viewer to be immediately drawn to the squirrel's head. Great color of the window frame, too!

I liked the picture but, the uses of the tail have all the interest of a rats behind.

Thanks for more info about the quirks of this animal/pest. Something to learn everyday here...

    Thanks all for the comments.

They do use the tail to balance themselves climbing high in the trees. Maybe compare it to the way the Wallendas used poles to balance on tightrope walks.

I can very well picture a squirrels tail twitching from one side to the other as he crawls down the rope to the bird feeder I'm curious about what time of year was this squirrel photo taken?
