Question about Jpeg in-Camera compression vs RAW

I try to keep the file simple, these complex small raw files are another place for things to go wrong when software reconstructs the original image. I also fear the day when I cannot read some of my raw files - maybe I should also save as DNG but even that seems to have different flavours from adobe.
