Old woman at old folks home

I took this shot at the Briddhashram old folk's home in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Old people generally stay with their family, but in cases where they either have no family or the family will not take care of them, they can live in a facility like this one, which house some 400+ men and women that are over 65 years old.

In this image, a woman is lying down on one of the raised areas of the facility. She seemed so alone and almost swallowed up by the place.

Interesting juxtaposition between the vibrance of the colors, and the sedentary lady. With the color so dynamic, it chases away any sense of loneliness or angst- more like a welcome respite in an otherwise full day.

She does seem to be crushed under the weight of those vertical lines behind her.

You are onto what I was trying to do with this image. The facility was built around a large courtyard and the steps and structures were in the centre of the courtyard. I positioned the old woman on one of the horizontal thirds and her head where the horizontal and vertical thirds intersected, to draw attention to her lying there. She was so colourful in the stark surroundings of horizontal and vertical lines, I just seemed to be a very powerful way of making this old woman seem so alone.

The facility was actually quite friendly looking. Lots of small groups of older men and women together chatting and sitting around. This image is probably more typical of what we saw.
