    Not seen too often

This was taken late at night when mrs ucci returned from a meeting. I had just turned on the front porch light for her and opened the front door when her eagle eye spotted this little bloke high up on the wall. He was obliging enough to sit and wait for me to race in and get back with a camera. We know they are around at night but are rarely, if ever, seen. This was the first, and most likely the last, we will be lucky to see.

Not a good angle but I had to shoot up at him as he was sitting up on the bricks several feet over my reach. You can see the bent wing, hence his name. And if you look closely you will see that he has huge ears running out and back from his head.

Okay, this pix is not really an example of a good, well composed and framed shot with pretensions of any technical merit. I just thought I would like to share this rare capture of a bent wing bat with those who have never seen one. They are quite small as you can see from using the background of the normal sized house bricks as a scale.

With apologies to those who may have been expecting a photo post with some technical merit.

Technical merit aside, I find bats to be fascinating and elusive creatures. Good capture

My wife would absolutely freak out if that was hanging outside our front door.

    Great capture!

We used to get these ( not sure of the species) quite often when we first moved into our house here. They would fly in through open louvres in the dark and hang on the light in the bathroom. We don't see them so often now, probably because we don't sleep with the windows open so much. We are told they should be treasured because they eat so many mosquitoes.

It's a good clear picture even if it doesn't have an "artistic" background.

Thank you all for viewing and your rather nice comments. And for Izzy and Mrs AOA... it was a cute harmless little bloke. Fortunately my daughter was in bed asleep. Otherwise he would have been gathered in by her, moved to suitably comfortable quarters, being adopted and given a name as another addition to her already existing menagerie, on which she lavishes much care and attention. Nothing is too good for her brood, only the best will do. And we are well aware of this as we have to pick up the tabs! Costing us a bloody fortune. Her animals eat better than I do! Anyway fortunately she was a sleep otherwise there would be another fat, over fed bat in the world, probably named something like Bonzo or Bruce or....:rolleyes

Bats are wonderful creatures. If we had bats in my area I would build some bat boxes in my trees.

The Congress Avenue Bridge, in Austin, Texas is home to thousands of bats. These bats are said to eat tons of insects every night but, that might be an overstatement.

Question, how many mosquitoes in a ton? Answer three Texas mosquitoes or two Florida mosquitoes!

However there are literally hundreds of thousands of bats living in Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. The bats fly out or the mouth of the caverns every evening and the flight is so dense that it looks like a stream of black smoke. But, unfortunately, there are far fewer bats that in earlier years because of the insecticides they ingest along with the insects...

Richard, I have had the pleasure of seeing the Austin bats, so AWESOME! In Texas we pray for bats as the mosquitos could carry us away in the summer. We need all the help we can get to get rid of them.

Well, not wishing to go one better, but the mosquitos down here have landing lights fitted and have to file flight plans.

Looks like it was smiling for the camera, Ken. Either that or it was wondering what you would taste like.

Well thank you Barbara. You are most kind about my scribbled dribble. As for your question. Do I write? Yes. But only in signing cheques; and only when I can get my hands on a sharp object, such as a pencil, without 'them' seeing. Why cheques? Well you see Mrs ucci, may the gods bless her, has this thing about shopping and....

Thanks for the laughs, Ken...I wish I can have Bill write those kinds of cheques for me too. Doesn't every woman love a sugar daddy? Lucky Glenise...
