Great use of diagonals and basic colours, John!

Tammy's vision tends to take the eye out of the scene. You might want try the exact same situation with Tammy in the left third of the image .

Nice image John - I agree with Frank. Compositionally, it usually works better with additional space left in the direction where someone (not just a dog) is looking. Same concept applies when someone or something is walking; leave the additional space in the direction where they are walking to.

What a beautiful dog. The yellow flowers add a nice touch. Regarding photo critique, the compositional aspect regarding position in the frame has already been mentioned. The shot was taken at an awkward angle to the lighting. Not fully back lit but mostly shot from the shadowed side. You've got a lovely model there to get out and shoot with.

IMHO would underscore the comments about more spacing to vision side. And as a suggestion, though others may disagree, with such spacing maybe the use of a very subtle vignette, to down play the water and bright background foliage, might draw the eye more towards the central subject, whose handsomeness is most deserved of our undivided attention. But that is just a thought from me, which does not give it any special credence.

I understand what people are saying about looking into the picture rather than out of it, but in this case I rather like the effect. There is a sort of mystery about what is out there that we cannot see. I like the balance of the picture except that the juxtaposition of the rocks and head of the dog is not ideal.

    Thanks Tony,

The rocks above her head, thanks for pointing that out.
There is a sort of mystery in the photo, now that you mentioned it.

This might work as a square crop as well as it would put more focus on Tammy.

    Re: My pet collie Tammy

Absolutely fantastic dog! IMO, a closer crop might show off this beautiful dog a bit better. This is just about what I mean...

    My pet collie Tammy

Actually, I would have left more space on image right but there wasn't any to leave. I would have cropped image left a bit closer to the dog but, I didn't want to crop off any tail...

I left a bit of space above the rocks out in the water because it just seemed better that way. Without the extra water space, the rocks seemed to compete with the dog...
