Street scene - a couple of Hindu priests standing around - Guwahati

What caught my eye when I took this shot was the contrast in the scene; the young and older priest just standing together. A garland seller was putting out his goods just behind them. The predominance of reds and warm tones on the walls seemed to tie this image together quite nicely.

The shot is not my usual style in street photography. I tend to look at shooting them in the same way I would tackle portraits; it's more about the people than the setting they are in. In this shot, both the people and setting share the image equally.

Nicely captured, I guess your typical style would perhaps require you to either: 1) move your position to get different angle on faces, 2) signal them so they turn towards you, 3) or wait for them to turn and perhaps lose the shot entirely, or you could just do as you did grab the shot as is and perhaps do one of the above for an additional shot.

John - in much of my street photography work, I tend to go for a style that tends to be more of what I sometimes refer to as "street portraiture", where the subject is the primarly objective and I only put enough of the environment in to place them. A lot of street photography tends to be about the setting and often I find that the subject and environment are given either the same weighting and in many instances the subject seems to be less important than the environment.

A recent posting; Hindu priest sitting at the temple of another hindu priest is all about the priest, with enought of his environment to place the location in the viewers mind.

When I took this shot, I decided I needed to mix things up a bit and make the shot as much about the location as the people in the image.

    Hi Manfred,

My style is a bit of all things possible, primary objective is to capture the image, secondly get image as sharp as possible (which causes me to shoot between f/8-f/16 light permitting), and environment usually compliments, contrasts, or competes with subject. I recently added a fast 85mm lens to my collection so I am experimenting more with apertures and environment as it relates to the subject.

The environment looks so interesting in India that IMO it is impossible to give less weight to it in the images Very nice and colorful shot. Do they walk on the streets with bare foot ?

They are on the street and are bare footed. You may have answered your own question.
