Anapurna Range Pano taken at sunrise

This is a 26 image pano of the Anapurna Range, in Nepal, taken just after sunrise from Poon Hill (3210m). The range is probably getting close to a 180 degree view. Perhaps not the best pano (lighting was difficult to deal with as it ranged from shooting close to the sun to some very deep shadows), but the shot means a great deal to me personally.

This has something to do with having climbed around 2.1 km in altitude gain over some 30+ km over two days (the last 900m climb was started before 5:00AM to get to the top of Poon Hill for sunrise at 6:10AM), at altitude (i.e. over 2400m / 8000ft).

It's a large file that can be examined in LiteBox view. The shot was assembled in Photoshop CC 2014. To take this shot I dragged a small, lightweight carbon fibre tripod, an L-bracket, a long rail and a pano head along in addition to the camera and lens.

That's an amazing picture. Could spend (did spend) ages just moving around the full size version in the Lightbox. Do you have a wall long enough on which to mount it?

Thanks Donald. Until I read your comment I had only looked at the smaller size. It really does need to be viewed as the full sized version in Lightbox to appreciate it fully.

Excellent shot! -- even if you have half a body of someone at the LHS. Looks like the air over there is crispy.

Izzie - please allow me a large, heart-felt laugh at your expense.

We were at an Ansel Adams / Edward Burtynsky exhibition last year and looked at some of Burtynsky's work. There were cut off people throughout some of his pieces. I remember commenting to my wife the if a lesser known photographer (like me) ever posted something like that on CiC, it would be pointed out to me immediately.

My setup was not quite perfect. I thought the camera was level and I was rotating around the entrance pupil; but I was not quite as good in my setup as I thought, and the image needed a bit more trimming on all sides than I had expected to do, this is why I have that half person there.

From a practical standpoint, the reason this came about was that I found that the red in the bottom right corner made a really good anchor in the image. I did crop and try it without her, but found that the image was not as effective. There were quite a few people on the hill that morning (easily 100+) and there were lots of them to the left of the image. The file itself is over 2 GB in size, so it is very slow and difficult to manipulate at all, so I did not even attempt to clone out the half figure.

I am likely to keep playing around with the image, so perhaps I can improve it a bit. I'll post any updates as I complete them. I have one version where I have gotten rid of him (combination of content aware fill, patch and clone tools), but it is a bit of kludge as well and won't stand up to a super close scrutiny either.

Does look much better in Lightbox, image looked grainy as smaller version, so much more detail revealed at larger size. Nicely captured.

Yes, but barely. The full size original is about 8' 9" long by 13.5" high (2.65m long x 34cm high). I expect it will cost a fortune to print and mount.

Excellent image Manfred, as to whether the part person should stay or go is a dilemma indeed. Personally I would leave all of the part people in the image, for no other reason than they help with a sense of scale. Given all of the effort of getting to your shooting position I congratulate you on both your stamina and photographic abilities. Well done Sir Anapurna Range Pano taken at sunrise
