    Elephants in the mist

These mahouts are getting their elephants ready to take tourists for rides in the buffer zone around Chitwan National Park in Nepal. The mist is heavy in the morning around sunrise and this results in some very interesting lighting.

The mist creates a very good moody feel to it. Nice creatures!

Nicely done, I love the challenge of shooting in the mist.

Fine image. Can feel that air.
In the litebox a bit of noise... on purpose in PP? High ISO? Or maybe my monitor.

ISO 500, wide open (f/4), hand-held at 1/250th at the close end of the range (108mm). The image is full size (not cropped at all). As I have said in other places where I comment on this camera, the reviews say that it has good noise characteristics. I tend to disagree, based on my shooting experience.

This shot was taken at 6:45, about 15 minutes after sunrise, with heavy mist; so it was still quite dark out. This is likely one of those shots where ETTR might have made a difference, as the colours are all biased towards the darker shades. I was shooting with the 100-300mm lens (200 - 600mm FF equivilent), so I was willing to give up a bit on the noise to get a sharp image.

I find the real challange is afterwards in post, trying to pull something decent out of the shot.

Thanks for the generous sharing of the info on my question, Manfred. As for the noise, I do not find it detracting here... I like it after the fashion of grain in certain B&W images.
