    Amaryllis Emerald - Phase Two

We are starting to see a second scape on the Amaryllis Emerald!

The first scape is about 5mm tall at this point. The pot is sitting on the window ledge and because I tilted the angle down a bit, we can now see some of the grass in the back yard in the background.

Here it is close enough so that the scapes are easier to see.

To see where this started, take a look at phase one.

I wonder how much longer it will be before these blossom?

    I'd give it 6 weeks.
Nice capture, which of your lenses were you using?

Thank you Alan! I am starting to play with the Tokina 100mm macro for this shot. The camera was just under 3 feet away at f/11, 1/10sec, ISO 125.

We've got a few in our backyard too. Once they get going they really get going.

Frank, I'd recommend you set up to take one picture a day as the plant grows. Same location/angle etc as near as is practical, and string them together in a video.
I guess you'd call that a time lapse wouldn't you?

Nice Amaryllis! Neat idea. If I only knew that the scape would grow straight and how tall it would get that might be an option. They usually bend to follow the sun so I need to rotate the pot every day or so. Also, I've seen these grow anywhere from 6" to 26" before they blossom!

Yeah, we uh, didn't have any 'small' ones as they all seemed to be competing for high flower of the garden last summer.

'Must be because of the differences in temperature to us who has to live with 4 seasons. Beautiful flowers, Alan. Frank I like Alan's suggestion of taking a photo/a/day to keep track. I would take a shot before you turn the pot around...

I tried this last year with a Phalaenopsis, with no succes. I wanted to do better this year
So early november I did start this 'one picture a day' with the Cymbidium I posted earlier. It was my goal to do a kind off an animated Gif, while the flowers were opening one by one.
I did set everything up, so nothing needed to be moved...my good old 50D on a tripod, and two continuous lights.
    Several 'issues' arose over time:
Though I started the sequence when the flower stalk was fully grown, It grew out off the frame, and bended too much.
    Some lightning issues...
It takes about 4 weeks for all flowers to open.... another miscalculation.
But the biggest problem was that the plant was moved around more than I expected...
so more advanced planning needed to be done....

I started another session about 10 days ago. I am anxious to see what will come out....

As Frank pointed out, Amaryllis do follow the light. And this was a big issue with Phalaenopsis last year.
    FWIW.

If you have watched time-lapse video of most plants growing, even situations where the subject is outdoors and has full day sun, you can watch them bob and weave considerably during the course of a single day. Indoors, where the light is more continuously coming from the direction of the window, the amount of bend in the scape can take the blossom entirely out of the frame in just a day or two so the images can be almost impossible to keep aligned in the frame.

I'd guess that the video forums would have some methods of dealing with this but here, even an animated GIF file size can easily grow too large for practical display.

I'm looking forward to see how your time lapse video turns out Rudi!
