What was your goal in this edit progression Jack? The fact that the buildings are leaning back is a bit disconcerting to me in all the edit...I feel like they are about to fall over

Re: I Started With This..... C&C Welcomed
Shane, basically I was curious to see how it would look as a B&W. The third image was just an experiment to see if it worked and how it looked. I was going for a line drawing image. In the original image (not posted) I adjusted the perspective on the LHS as it leaned towards the right. In doing so I lost the bit of the building on the LHS. Further adjusting the perspective to pull the buildings forward lost the building on the RHS. So it's always a compromise.

Hi,
I do like the b&w image. with the structural detail. I would crop it quite severely from the right, and just a fraction front the left to remove the bright edge, and just keep the main building. Also straighten if possible.

I think you have a great subject there, Jack, but I wouldn't necessarily try to capture the whole building in one frame. The Z shaped stair cases attract my eye. If you have the pixels, you could try a crop on this image, but I think I would like to see a shot with part of that as the subject.
In the black and white version, try dropping the sky down til it is really dark - not the cloud, just the blue section - in an Ansel Adams kind of way.

Jack --- that shot has a nice progression to it. I was about to critique the first one but when I saw the different edit, I knew you will not like to be critique on the shot but on the series of edits.
Have you tried this one?-- Transform a Photo into an Architect's Blue Print Drawing...

Re: I Started With This..... C&C Welcomed
Jack, I think that Greg is onto something with regard to focusing only on the stairs in a crop or a re-shoot. My guess is that in NYC these stairs are fairly common on older buildings and something that might get overlooked by a native as something that they see everyday. For those of us that live in 'newer' cities they are fascinating and quite beautiful.
I like the concept of the line drawing and applaud you for trying it out. For me the actual photo is better but I can imagine using it as part of an artistic composite. Have you seen the work of Pep Ventosa?

I am thinking Black and white focusing on the Old building. the new one to the right distracts from the lines of the older oneJMHO.

Izzie, thanks. Mostly I was playing with an image that I like, for reasons I couldn't articulate. To me it seemed to work well in B&W but even more so as a sketch. Neat idea in your link, gonna see what I can do in that direction too.

Shane, thanks and I agree about Greg's idea, something I'm working on. In fact it was exactly the fire escape(s) that caught my eye. I had never heard of Pep Ventosa until you, looked at his work, very unique and interesting. Not sure I'm inclined towards that level of abstraction but it does open the mind to possibilities.

Re: I Started With This..... C&C Welcomed
Thanks Mark. Thing is it was the older building (and fire escapes) that caught my eye, but the juxtaposition of old and new buildings (rather typical in NYC) warranted a photographic exploration.
